Singapore's Sea Turtles: Our Vulnerable Residents

Singapore's rich marine environment is a vital habitat for several sea turtle species. The most commonly sighted are the Critically Endangered Hawksbill Turtle and the Endangered Green Turtle. Globally, seven species exist: Hawksbill, Green, Loggerhead, Leatherback, Olive Ridley, Kemp's Ridley, and Flatback.

Key challenges threatening turtles include:

  • Habitat Loss & Degradation: Coastal development reduces nesting beaches and feeding grounds.
  • Pollution: Plastics, chemicals, and oil threaten marine life.
  • Bycatch: Accidental capture in fishing nets is a major global threat.
  • Climate Change: Rising seas and warmer sands skew sex ratios and inundate nesting sites.
