Singapore's Sea Turtles: Our Vulnerable Residents
Singapore's rich marine environment is a vital habitat for several sea turtle species. The most commonly sighted are the Critically Endangered Hawksbill Turtle and the Endangered Green Turtle. Globally, seven species exist: Hawksbill, Green, Loggerhead, Leatherback, Olive Ridley, Kemp's Ridley, and Flatback.
Key challenges threatening turtles include:
- Habitat Loss & Degradation: Coastal development reduces nesting beaches and feeding grounds.
- Pollution: Plastics, chemicals, and oil threaten marine life.
- Bycatch: Accidental capture in fishing nets is a major global threat.
- Climate Change: Rising seas and warmer sands skew sex ratios and inundate nesting sites.
